Abstract

Education in The Gambia: Issues, Initiatives, Policies and Practices addresses the enormous challenges of illiteracy, poverty, democracy, disease and tourism-related problems facing the people of sub-Saharan African region of The Gambia.  It offers educators and human development students strategies on how to become globally competitive in a complex national education and development environment. Contributors to the volume offer their insights into the issues every Gambian educator, researcher or donor to the education sector needs to understand - such as the nature of the Gambian education and development environment, teaching-learning strategies, national policy on education, national human resource development and management, tourism, human rights and cultural issues.  The book covers general as well as specific topics, including assumptions, theories, policies and practices of education and development initiatives.  It is expected that the book will enable general education researchers, human development and management resource students, administrators and donor agencies to avoid common drawbacks in their quest to build successful education and development projects that will benefit Gambians, and the entire global community.
